Cutting to the beat

Lumit places a beat marker on each beat of a composition’s music. Cuts snap to the markers.

1. Put the music in the composition. Drag the song from the Project panel into the Timeline. It becomes an Audio layer.

2. Open the Audio panel. Switch to the Audio workspace on the strip at the right of the toolbar. The Audio panel is in the right-hand column.

3. Choose what to listen to. In Beats, set Source to the song’s layer, or leave it on This comp to hear the whole mix.

4. Set how keen the detection is. Raise Sensitivity for more beats, lower it for fewer. To fix the tempo instead, type it into BPM, or press Tap in time with the song.

5. Place the markers. Press Generate beat markers. The status line says how many were placed, and the markers appear on the ruler. Press it again after a change to replace them.

Generate beat markers: the markers land on the ruler and the status line counts them.

6. Move the playhead to a beat. Switch back to the Edit workspace. Hold Shift and drag along the Timeline ruler, and the playhead lands on the nearest marker.

7. Cut the footage there. Select the footage layer and press Ctrl+Shift+D to split it at the playhead. Or press C for the razor and click the footage bar near a marker: with the magnet on, the cut lands on the marker.

In the Cut workspace the razor snaps to the same markers with Snap on, and Ctrl+K cuts at the playhead.
