Lens dirt

Lens dirt is a Stylise effect.

Dirt on the glass of a lens: dust, grit, hairs, smudges, haze, scratches and water. The dirt only shows where light from the bright parts of the picture reaches it. The glass is always out of focus by the F-stop: wide open a speck of dust is a large faint disc in the iris’s shape, stopped down a small bright one. Droplets bend the picture behind them.

The pattern comes from the Seed, sized against the frame, so every preview resolution shows the same dirt.

In the Effect Controls panel:

  • Dirt groups Dust, Grit, Hairs, Smudges, Haze, Scratches, Droplets, Refraction.
  • Iris groups Blades, Roundness, Rotation, and starts closed.
  • Light groups Threshold, Spread, Ambient, and starts closed.
  • Colour groups Colour, Tint, Second tint, Colour variation, and starts closed.
  • Second tint is editable while Colour is set to Gradient.
  • Matte is an input to an effect, scaling the strength. Invert inverts the mattes for calculating strength.
  • Intensity: how bright the lit dirt is.
  • F-stop: how far out of focus the glass is. In a node graph, wire Depth of field pro’s F-stop here to follow it.
  • Focus distance (m): where the lens is focused. Focusing close brings the dirt a little sharper. Wire Depth of field pro’s Focus distance (m) here to follow it.
  • Dirt scale: the size of the pattern.
  • Glass curvature: how far the glass bulges. The dirt crowds towards the edges of the frame as the glass turns away, and spreads out on dished glass below 0. Type up to 2 for the hard bend of a fisheye’s front glass. Wire Depth of field pro’s Glass curvature here to follow its lens.

The Dirt group:

  • Dust, Grit, Hairs, Smudges, Haze, Scratches and Droplets: how much of each is on the glass. Dust sits on several surfaces, so its discs come in many sizes and turn into cat’s eyes towards the frame’s edge. Grit and hairs sit near the sensor and stay sharp. Fingerprint ridges in the smudges show only when stopped down.
  • Refraction: how hard droplets bend the picture behind them.

The Iris group shapes the out-of-focus dust:

  • Blades is how many straight edges the iris has.
  • Roundness blends the blades towards a circle.
  • Rotation rotates the iris.

The Light group:

  • Threshold: the brightness above which the picture lights the dirt.
  • Spread: how far across the glass a light reaches.
  • Ambient: lights all of the glass, whatever the picture.

The Colour group:

  • Colour: Single gives all the dirt the Tint. Gradient gives each speck a colour picked at random between Tint and Second tint.
  • Colour variation: how far each speck’s hue and brightness stray either side of its colour. Smudges and haze vary slowly across the glass instead.

Additional properties:

  • Display: Final is the picture with its dirt, Dirt alone the lit dirt over black, to lay over something else. In a node graph each has an output socket of its own; see node graph compositions.
  • Seed: picks a different pattern.
  • Mix: how much of the result replaces the original.
