Value noise

Value noise is a Siceliot effect.

Wanders smoothly between Minimum and Maximum over time. Each copy Clone to points stamps can wander on its own path, or read a field of noise laid over where the copies stand.

Wired into Clone to points’ own Scale, Rotation or Opacity, or into Label points’ Change, Label scale, Text step or Label rotation, it gives each stamp or label its own value, for up to 4096 points. In what a clone layer shows, it renders that layer once per copy, as Clone index does. Anywhere else it reads as the first copy of one.

Where a copy stands is known only when the driver is wired into those rows. Anywhere else it reads as the top left corner of the composition.

In the Effect Controls panel:

  • Noise scale is editable while Vary by is set to Position.
  • Minimum: the lowest it wanders to.
  • Maximum: the highest it wanders to.
  • Frequency: how quickly it wanders, in turns a second.
  • Detail: layers of finer wander on top, each half as strong.
  • Vary by: what makes the copies differ. Nothing moves them together, Copy gives each its own path, and Position lays a field of noise over the points, so neighbours move alike and the pattern drifts with time.
  • Noise scale: the size of the field’s features.
  • Seed: which path it wanders.

On the layer that holds Clone to points, Value noise from -20 to 20 with Vary by on Position and a Noise scale of 200, wired into Clone to points’ Rotation, sways the copies together like grass in wind.
